London designer Paul Cocksedge recently completed A sculpture installed in the courtyard of hotel in lyon for the city’s annual festival of lights. 200 suspended A3 sheets were made from an electrically conductive material that lights up when a current passes through it.

the v&a has commissioned designers studio roso to create a christmas tree for the grand entrance of the museum. the handmade tree is made of 3.3 miles of elastic cord. a total of 1500 individual strands have been combined to create the outline of a traditional christmas tree. the geometric shapes reference both traditional christmas ornaments & the crystalline structure of snowflakes & icicles.

Open for business for just two weeks during the London Design Festival we have received some fantastic reviews from those who completed the experience.

We collaborated with our friends at The Future Laboratory to create a one-off interactive installation which would allow us to share and explore our ideas about the future of retail. A touch of magic, intimacy and theatre all played a part in creating the hyper-real experience which experimented with the relationship between and characteristics of online and in-store retailing.

Molecular Structure Window Display

French designer Arnold Goron has recently completed new window displays for french fashion designer Isabel Marant.
these special installations entitled 'molecular structure' can be found in the shops of Marant in Paris, New York,
Madrid, Beirut and Beijing.

For the scientifically derived window visuals, Goron has used a 'samba stick', a wood that has the lightness of balsa, but stronger,
which have been sharpened to a point like a pencil. The sticks are all connected by use of polystyrene balls forming the
large, abstract molecular structures. Goron has then added a motor over the hanging structures, making them spin around slowly
on featured window mannequins. In some of the installations, the mannequins are spinning in the opposite way that the structure
is moving, to give more of a visual effect.

Japanese designer takeshi sano has created a ceiling design, using thousands of wooden sticks, in the tsujita restaurant in los angeles, california.

Designers own words:

i put image of clouds for the ceiling detail. there is IZUMO shrine, one of the most important shrine in shimane, japan. the clouds we can see there, has beauty but mysterious image. i wanted to show those images on this design. i put 25,000 of wooden sticks, which was shaped like drum stick on the ceiling.
in order to increase a reality of clouds, i calculate the focal length between eye line and wooden sticks and use that length for the stick length. also, i made difference on the distance between stick each other so that to make a stereoscopic effect to wooden cloud. not only for this project. i'm always challenging to create a space that coexist art and interior. at the same time, i'd like people to feel the delicate of beauty which japanese have, and japanese atmosphere when they visit here so that they will think that they want to visit japan. i'd like to make this restaurant as one of an element for japanese reconstruction.

Hirata’s hats exhibition by Nendo

The graphic and exhibition design for the first major Japanese retrospective of internationally-known milliner Hirata Akio’s seventy years of work. For the exhibition space, we wanted to make Hirata’s hats stand out. The mass-produced non-woven fabric hats we created for the space are the antithesis of Hirata’s carefully handmade hats, and bring them into sharp relief through dramatic contrast. Hirata oversaw the shape of these hats, which float and stream through the exhibition like ghosts or shells of the real hats exhibited. Some are exhibition stands; others become walls, ceilings and diffusers to scatter  light through the space. Flooded with roughly 4000 of these ‘ghost hats’ as though shrouded in a cloud, the exhibition space softly invites visitors inside. There, they find not clear-cut paths to follow but an environment in which they can wander and discover Hirata’s creations as they like, as a way of physically experiencing the creative freedom that underlies Hirata’s work.

Campaign crew made the short walk to Batemans Row EC2 for the opening of their latest project - 1948 - Nike's East London home, retailing their most exclusive footwear and apparel. Architecture is Advertising

The high street of the future represents a valuable medium to deliver a brand story - ‘architecture is advertising’ is the idea that will transform our high streets into a series of immersive bill boards and brand lounges, which due to the premium of space will be too valuable to cram full with piles of products and instead evolve into alluring, interactive environments – imagine an advert that you can smell, touch and walk around. Brand advertising is not about what we are told but what we experience and how we connect physically and emotionally.

In the future, retailers will have developed a better understanding of the relationship between online and in-store and will maximize the use of space to deliver experiences that cannot be delivered through our laptops. Online will be for sales while the in-store high street space will engage with all the senses and leave an indelible impression.

Turner Contemporary, Margate - David Chipperfield

Due to open at the end of the week is Chipperfield's Turner Contemporary in Margate. The particular significance of this project for the practice is it is their first public building in the UK.

The controversial project hit a few problems prior to Chipperfield's involvement. Snøhetta and Spence Associates, the original designers could not keep costs down and was then cancelled before the mantle was passed to Chipperfield.

In the true style of the architect, the building comprises of 6 identical monopitched roofed volumes and will be one of the biggest art galleries outside of London.

Project 12:31 by Croix Gagnon & Frank Schott

This is probably the most macabre art project since the supervillianously named Dr.Von Hagens decided to make some friends out of plastinated corpses. [See Body Worlds exhibition].

The process involved starts of with the messy business of slicing up the cadaver of Joseph Paul Jernigan into 1,871 slices, each a millimeter thick all the way through from scalp to the soles of his feet. The cross sections are then photographed and sequenced [head to foot] on a laptop and played through. Still with me?Shot under very slow shutter speed and low light, the laptop is then moved and the result is the ghostly [and wobbly] form of the deceased.

The results below are both beautiful, poignant and gruesome in equal measure.

Furniture by Vincent Duborg

It must be the rebellion in the air that inspired Vincent Duborg to do this furniture installation. Using traditional furniture making techniques such as timber forming and metal casting, he has painstakingly crafted the illusion of chaos. It may be as subtle as a punch in the face, but one has to appreciate the beauty of their craft.

Living Roof on a Bus//

Marco Castro Cosio, a graduate of NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program, designed this green roof for a bus as part of his thesis project named "Bus Roots." Coslo wanted to " Reclaim forgotten space, increase quality of life and grow the amount of green spaces in the city," which would not only add aesthetic values to the city but also help reduce carbon dioxide.

As Coslo explains on his website:

-A public transit bus has a surface of 340 square feet. The MTA fleet has around 4,500 buses.

-If we grew a garden on the roof of every one of the 4,500 buses in the MTA bus fleet, we would have 35 acres of new rolling green space in the city, the equivalent to the space of four Bryant Parks.

The photos on this page of MTA buses outfitted with green roofs are digital renderings of what buses could look like, though Coslo has already installed a green roof on a bus for a real-life tryout:

His first prototype bus garden was grown on the roof of the Bio Bus, which is a science lab inside a re-purposed San Francsico transit bus that visits public schools in New York and in the Midweset to provide hands-on science education for schools that lack high-tech science labs for their students. As the site explains, "the BioBus is carbon neutral; its daily energy needs are provided by solar panels, a wind turbine, and an engine that runs on waste vegetable oil."

From the outside, the building is an amorphous shape that inspires different perceptions in each visitor, while on the inside the museums varied topology reflects the diversity of the collection. The shell of the building is constructed with steel columns of different diameters, each with its own geometry and shape, offering the visitor non-linear circulation. There are 16,000 square meters of exhibition space divided among six floors, as well as an auditorium, a café, offices, a gift shop, a multi-use lobby, and storage space. The top floor is the largest space; its roof is suspended from a cantilever that allows natural lighting. The building s façade is made from hexagonal aluminum modules facilitating its preservation and durability.

Eyewear aficionados descended en masse to the opening of Campaign's latest project - the Kirk Originals flagship store on London's Conduit Street. A fine evening was had - if a little cramped.. the band the frames and the Winkies all received rave reviews!

Approaching the US/Canadian border from either country, you’re faced with countless billboards advertising products, Duty Free and promoting the nation with images of flags and national pride. As they give way to directional signage and customs related notices, you’ll now find a surreal examination of advertising, architecture and the environment, a negative billboard that frames nothing other than nature.

Sitting between Blaine, Washington and the highway to Vancouver, Non-Sign II – created by Seattle based Lead Pencil Studio and commissioned by the US Government’s ‘Excellence in Design’ program – is a beautiful, thought-provoking installation that took 9 months to construct in their Seattle studio, with small sections being trucked to the site and stitched together over a 2 week period. Challenging, innovative and more engaging than any traditional advertising could be, Lead Pencil’s invisible billboard makes for possibly the most inspiring border crossing you’ll experience…

Folding Plug - Min Kyu Choi

Bit of an old story, but got brought up in conversation andthought it deserved to be back in the public conscious. If you have never seen this before, you're in for a design-based orgasm.

Min Kyu Choi a Korean graduate from the Royal College of Art, designed this little piece of genius; a folding plug, which apart from the obvious travelling advantages, [Which in itself, merits its title of 'Brit Insurance Design of the Year'] it's the nifty multiplug adaptor and USB adaptor that elevates it to genius. I expect Min is going to make an absolute packet once it clears BSI regulations.
